The name Abbots Langley means a long field owned by the abbot.
It was in Abbots Langley over 800 years ago that the only Englishman
to become Pope of Rome (Adrian The Fourth in 1154) was born.
Nicholas Breakspeare, son of a poor man. He was left to fend for himself
when his father entered the monastery of St. Albans. He made his way to France
where Nicholas Breakspeare entered the Abbey of St. Rufus near Avignon
where he started his journey to become Pope.
